This weekend the public can get a sneak peek at the route of the Coastal Walkway’s extension to Bell Block.

A 1pm this Sunday (18 October) the public is invited to turn up to Ellesmere Avenue, Bell Block to take part in a guided walk from Bell Block to the Waiwhakaiho River.

“The route of the 3km pathway has been mapped out and we thought the public would like a ‘before and after’ look at the Coastal Walkway extension – get a feel for the landscape now, and then revisit it when the walkway is all sealed in late summer,” says Project Manager Angela James.

The walk is across rough ground with some stiles to be crossed, taking about 1.5 hours, so a reasonable level of fitness is required.

However the views along the route are breathtaking, says Ms James.

“This route opens up a stretch of the coastline that is the essence of the raw west coast – and hopefully it’ll be a fine day because there are awesome views of the mountain, the city and the gorgeous sea from a number of places.

“A lot of work has gone into planning a route that not only makes the most of the coastal environment but which also takes into account erosion zones and archaeological sites.

“It’s been a challenge, but when the extension is completed the entire walkway will measure 10km from the port to Bell Block.”

The pathway is scheduled for completion in late summer, with the Waiwhakaiho River bridge in place by March next year.

People taking part in the public walk should meet at the end of Ellesmere Avenue (look for the Council flags) at 1.00pm, with the walk itself starting at 1.15pm. After the walk, the public will be bussed back to Ellesmere Avenue (for just a gold coin donation).

Walkers are encouraged to bring with them bottled water and any snacks they might need. There are no toilets en route.

If the day is rained off, the walk will be held on Sunday 1 November.
