New Plymouth Airport has beaten all other competitors to be named the Top Regional Airport in New Zealand.

The award was made by the New Zealand Airports Association at its conference in Palmerston North.

Manager Airport Kevin Hill says New Plymouth was up against stiff competition from Tauranga, Rotorua and Nelson.

“Tauranga has just built an entirely new terminal and Rotorua has recently extended and become an international airport, but the association gave the nod to New Plymouth because of all the developments we’ve done over the last three years,” says Mr Hill.

“The award means the association feels New Plymouth Airport has come a long way in recent years, to the point where we’re the best regional airport in the country this year.

“It’s fantastic to have that recognition from the national body.”

The developments at New Plymouth Airport have included the laying of a new runway surface, the development of a new cafeteria, a redesign of the terminal’s interior to improve passenger flow and safety, and a larger and more secure public car park.
