WELLINGTON

Police say a group of overdue trampers should be able to walk out of the Rimutaka Forest Park later today.

The trampers have been unable to cross the Orongorongo River but water levels are currently dropping.

"The weather in the area is good. It has not been raining and no rain is expected today," says Constable Brett Main, who is leading the Police Search and Rescue operation.

"Based on current information, it's likely the river's water level will drop low enough for the group to be able to walk out without our assistance. We're currently monitoring and reassessing the situation as the waters recede."

The four adults went tramping in the Rimutaka Forest Park on Saturday and were due out on Sunday. The group is reasonably equipped but with limited tramping experience.
