Five train containers broken into

A train believed to be linked to the recovery of numerous boxes of cheese in the Halcombe and Marton areas earlier today has now arrived at Auckland and it has been confirmed that five containers of the train have been broken into.

All five containers have been isolated and police are now working with Kiwi Rail to establish what was in the containers and exactly what, if any thing, has been stolen from them. One is confirmed as carrying cheese; another is believed to be carrying malt.

Eight boxes of cheese 20 kilo blocks of cheese were recovered after reports from a rail worker around 7.10 this morning of people acting suspiciously on the rail line near Kakariki. They got into a car and drove off throwing the blocks of cheese from the car as they drove. About 10 minutes later a car was stopped in Sanson by police and two people were arrested.

Four further boxes of cheese were later spotted by a train driver by the side of the rail line near Marton.

A 21-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman are currently helping police with their enquiries.

Anyone who has any information about this theft, saw suspicious activity around a stationary train, or finds anything boxes of cheese along that stretch of rail line is asked to contact Feilding Police on 06 323 6363.
