School student arrested after towing chilly bin

At approximately 7.50am on Sunday the 15th of November 2009 Dunedin Police were notified that a vehicle was towing a person seated in a chilly bin on Princes Street, Dunedin.

A short time later a further report was made that the chilly bin was being ridden down Baldwin Street, (The Steepest Street in the World)

About 10 minutes later Police stopped a vehicle outside the Dunedin Botanical Gardens. There were 6 occupants in the vehicle.

The chilly bin was located inside the vehicle and a 17 year old Dunedin High School student was arrested and charged with Dangerous Driving.

Police inquiries revealed that the group had been involved in an incident at approximately 7.00am that morning where petrol had been poured on the road on John Wilson Ocean Drive, Dunedin and set alight.

It appears that members of the group were then pushed through the fire while on the lid of the chilly bin.

Two males aged 22 and 24 were later arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour.

All 3 males will appear in the Dunedin District Court later this week.


The body was retrieved by Police and Ambulance staff along with members of the Port Chalmers Fire Brigade.

No further details of the deceased are available at this time until next of kin have been notified.

There don't appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and the matter has been referred to the coroner.
