Residents are invited to try their hand at building bridges, throwing grenades and 'pinning the moustache on the gentleman' during the first of a two-part series of fun days at Waikato Museum this Saturday [28 November] from 11am-4pm.

The 'How to Never Have a Dull Moment' fun days are running alongside the museum's local history exhibition 'Never a Dull Moment: Hamilton Stories' and aim to give visitors the chance to trial a range of historical skills.

At this Saturday's fun day attendees will be invited to dress up like a gentleman for spot prizes, vote for the moustaches in the moustache competition, learn how to throw a hand grenade, and participate in the 'Pacifist Battle of the Boroughs' with Alf's Imperial Army leading the charge.

For children, Pacifist Battle Boot Camp at 12.30pm will be an hour of 'general madness dressed up in the best Victorian manners'. While participation is free, children must pre-register for the boot camp by contacting Waikato Museum.

Waikato Museum Director Kate Vusoniwailala said the aim of the fun days is to add another dimension to the 'Never a Dull Moment: Hamilton Stories' exhibition.

"While 'Never a Dull Moment' is worth a visit on its own, by running the 'How to Never Have a Dull Moment' fun days alongside the exhibition it provides visitors with a real unique, hands-on experience," she said.

"These are activities that most people wouldn't have tried their hands at before, so I am sure they will prove both educational and entertaining."

The second fun day, 'Idle Hands Make Mischief' will be held at Waikato Museum next Saturday, 5 December from 11am-4pm, and will include a knitting working bee, a lesson on how to make a dress from a pattern, waltz and cha-cha workshops, and a 'Great Hamilton Bakeoff'.
