Some Things Change, Some Stay The Same
This morning between 7.30 a.m. and 9.00 a.m. Intersection Safety Team targeted the traffic lights at the intersection of Main North Road, Papanui Road and Harewood Road. Sergeant Peter Daly and his team found that traffic light offending at that intersection there had reduced significantly, but that safety belt offending was still at an unacceptably high level.
18 prosecutions arose from the 90 minute operation. These were mainly safety belt offences, with the only traffic light offences having been committed by cyclists.
Sergeant Daly says he can't understand why someone doesn't wear a safety belt. "These days cars have airbags, side impact beams, traction control, ABS, all manner of safety features that mean nothing if the most basic, fundamental safety feature, the safety belt, isn't worn."
Anyone found by Police not to be wearing a safety belt as required will have enforcement action taken against them. "The days of warnings for this are gone", said Sergeant Daly.
