A 35 year-old Tirau man is in a serious condition at Waikato Hospital after being involved in a single-vehicle crash 2 km north of Tokoroa on State Highway One.

The crash occurred at about 11:30pm on Sunday the 20th of December.

The Toyota Hilux 4WD that the man was driving failed to take a bend and rolled. As a result, the driver and sole-occupant was thrown from the vehicle. The Hilux then came to rest on top of the man.

Senior Sergeant Lincoln Sycamore says that alcohol is not believed to be a factor, however the fact that the driver was thrown from the vehicle indicates that he was not wearing his seatbelt.

"In some instances, the message around seatbelts is not getting through and Police want to remind motorists that any offences detected will be strictly enforced. Simply put, seatbelts save lives."
