Police attended a domestic incident at an address along SH 26 in Matatoki, Thames at about 10.00am this morning.

The offender left the address and walked along the highway into the path of on-coming traffic armed with a knife.

Sometime later he discarded the knife and went back to the address whilst making threats to obtain more weapons.

Police quickly established cordons just north and south of SH 26. The Armed Offenders Squad was deployed. A male in his late thirties has now been arrested and is in custody.

The highway is now open again and delays of up to 2 hours is expected to clear the current backlog of traffic.
