Fatal collision at Matata

One person is dead and three people have been taken to hospital following a head-on collision just after 6pm this evening on State Highway 2, Matata, otherwise known as the Matata Straights.

The deceased person was a passenger in an eastbound vehicle which crossed the centre line, colliding with a car travelling westbound. The three people (including the driver) who have been hospitalised, were all travelling in the eastbound car.

It is believed that those travelling in the westbound car sustained minor injuries.

The road was closed for approximately 45 minutes, but has now re-opened.

It is a straight piece of road, and it is not yet known why the eastbound car crossed the centre line.
