A German tourist has been killed as she cycled along SH3 between Bulls and Turakina.

The incident happened around 11.50 this morning (Tuesday, 5 January) between the junctions of Neumans Line and Santoft Road.

The cyclist was pedalling towards Wanganui on SH3 about 4km north of Bulls when she was struck by a truck and trailer heading in the same direction. Both the cycle and the truck were on the inside lane of a passing lane zone when the crash happened.

The cyclist was declared dead at the scene and the truck driver was not injured but shaken.

Police are currently liaising with the German Embassy to locate and inform next of kin. The woman will not be named until her family have been told of the death.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway by the Serious Crash Investigation Unit and anyone who has any information about the crash is asked to contact Marton Police on 06 327 6555.

This is the first person to die on the roads of Central District in 2010.
