Avoiding Theft From Vehicles In Rodney
Senior Sergeant Phil Paratene says Police are focusing on vehicle crime in Rodney. "The Rodney Region has numerous beach and tourist venues on both the East and West Coast that are very popular at this time of the year"
“So far this summer there’s been fewer incidences of property theft from cars than in previous years. Even with just one vehicle broken into it’s one vehicle too many. The impact on the victim[s] can be traumatic. They often feel their privacy and security has been invaded.”
Prior to the summer holiday season there has been a close liaison with the Rodney District Council, Auckland Regional Authority and Department of Conservation who control many popular destinations in Rodney and a concerted effort to make these locations safer. Some recent initiatives are:
• Security signs such as “lock it or lose it” have been increased.
• Plantings have been pruned to give greater visibility in car parks,
• Education displays in areas prone to vehicle theft have been held
• Increased security signage and security advice brochures introduced,
• Uniformed Police and Community patrols have been increased in areas
“Overall we are pleased with the results so far. There’s been a huge increase in the population numbers among both holiday and day visitors. Our police surveillance level will continue until the end of the summer, ” he said.
Police are urging the public to be constantly vigilant when accessing or travelling into the many popular beach and tourist locations in the region.
“We want the public to call us about any suspicious activity that is observed in both crowded car parks as well as isolated picnic spots. Car owners should ensure the security of their vehicle is intact. This will avoid them becoming a victim of such a crime,” he says.
"Common sense is necessary when leaving vehicles unattended. Take your possessions with you if possible or hide them from clear view.”
“Do not leave your vehicle in isolated locations. Ensure your vehicle is always locked. Use every means available to protect your car, and your property. If you see any suspicious activity call the triple one emergency number or report the incident anonymously to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111,” Senior Sergeant Paratene said.
