Mayor goes into 'demolition' business

Manukau’s Mayor, Len Brown, is going into the demolition business, wielding a sledge-hammer to begin demolishing Papatoetoe’s cricket pavilion.

The cricket pavilion has been the home of some of New Zealand’s top-level cricketers, including Deputy Mayor Gary Troup, for more than 40 years. Now, it is making way for the new $12 million Papatoetoe Multi-sports facility.

Mr Brown, assisted by Mr Troup, will start off the demolition on Tuesday, 19 January 2010, at 8.30am at the Papatoetoe Recreation Grounds on Great South Road, Papatoetoe, Manukau.

Note – When completed, the Papatoetoe Multi-sports facility will provide artificial playing surfaces including: artificial hockey turf and artificial tennis courts, both with lighting towers, changing rooms, indoor practice nets, lounge areas and landscaping.


Progress so far:

One large field has been created by removing trees between the Kingswood Road and Papatoetoe Recreation grounds and lowering the No 2 rugby field.

New cricket nets constructed.

Relaid three artificial cricket wickets.

Six new tennis courts under construction and due to open in February.

Construction under way on a new artificial hockey turf (due to open in May)
