Man dead after hit by train

A person has been killed after being struck by a train in Taihape this morning.

The 44 year old male was at the Taihape Railway station at around 2.20 am as a south bound Tranzrail freight train passed through at low speed.

He was struck by the train as it passed by and died at the scene as a result of injuries received.

The circumstances of what exactly happened are yet to be established and police are now attempted to retrace his movements leading up to this incident.

The train and emergency services are still at the scene and it is not know when the line will be opened up.

Some next of kin have been advised of the death however the name of the deceased will not be released at this stage.
