Whangärei Police have arrested two men in relation to a rape that occurred more than two years ago.

About 2.30am on September 2007 two men allegedly raped an 18-year-old woman in the toilets of the Information Centre on Tawera Road, Whangärei.

Following the incident Police carried out a thorough investigation and it received widespread publicity through the local media and Police Ten 7.

As a result of recent forensic inquiries Police have located and arrested two men in relation to the rape.

The men, aged 20 and 21 years, will appear in the Whangärei District Court on Thursday February 4 facing charges of sexual violation and abduction.

Whangärei CIB O/C Detective Senior Sergeant Dene Begbie says this has been a significant inquiry that Police have been working on for the past two years.

"Due to good policing and investigation work we have arrested two people in relation to this crime."
