Temporary stay on water restrictions

Rain over last weekend has delayed the introduction of water restrictions at Kaitaia.

But the reprieve is likely to be temporary and not just for Kaitaia, General Manager Assets and Infrastructure David Penny said today.

"River levels stabilised for a few days but there are already indications that flow levels are falling again. This means a ban on home irrigation systems and sprinklers is not too far away.

"If the latest weather projections are correct, it looks increasingly likely that restrictions will need to be imposed, not just at Kaitaia but possibly in other areas as well. NIWA is now saying there is a 60% probability the river flows in the Far North will be below average for the next three months," he said.

Any further fall in river levels would impact on the council's ability to take water for treatment and distribution.

“We will continue to do what we can to keep unrestricted water supplies going. However we would urge people to continue to save water wherever they can. Look for leaks and think of anything you can do to cut back the amount of water you use every day. Please be aware that the situation is serious and likely to get worse.

"The more voluntary savings that can be made, the longer it will be before compulsory restrictions are introduced," he said.
