Two new District Court Judges for Manukau

Two new judges have been appointed to sit at the Manukau District Court, Attorney-General Christopher Finlayson announced today.


Wellington barrister and solicitor Brooke Gibson and Auckland barrister Jonathan Moses have been appointed as District Court Judges, and will sit at the Manukau District Court.


Mr Moses was admitted to the bar in 1985. He was a founding solicitor at the Mangere Law Centre, before becoming a barrister sole in South Auckland from 1990 to 2000 specialising in criminal work. He is a former member of the Refugee Status Appeals Authority and the Crown Prosecution Panel. Between 2001 and 2009, Mr Moses was employed in Tanzania by the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UNICTR). He led the prosecution of two high profile genocide trials. He is also a former Trustee and Chair of the Mangere Community Law Office Trust.


Mr Gibson worked in various firms in Wellington and Hastings before becoming a sole practitioner. In late 1988 he merged his sole practice with Macalister Mazengarb, becoming a partner, and in 1991 he became responsible for the firm's Chatham Islands practice. He returned to sole practice in 1996. He has a wide range of civil, criminal and commercial litigation experience, as well as dealing with and disciplinary and tribunal matters. In 2001 he was appointed to the Crown Panel for Wellington. He has had three civil appearances at the Privy Council.


Mr Gibson will be sworn in at Wellington on Wednesday 17 February. Mr Moses will be sworn in at Manukau on Friday 26 February.
