Police officer seriously injured by drunk driver

A Whangarei constable has received serious facial injuries following an alleged assault by a suspected drunk driver.

Detective Inspector Malthus advised that the Constable and a colleague had stopped the suspected drunk driver in the Kamo suburb of Whangarei at about 11.15pm on Friday 19 February.

The alleged offender became aggressive and attacked the constable who received a serious facial injury after allegedly being bitten during the attack, said Detective Inspector Malthus.

The Constable has been admitted to hospital and will be transferred to Auckland hospital later in the day for specialist treatment. Detective Inspector Malthus states that Police will not be releasing the name of the Constable, or any other details, however his family have been advised and are with him.

Police welfare services have been engaged to provide support to the Constable, his family and colleagues.

A 29 year old, Whangarei man has been charged with drink driving related charges, threatening to kill, resisting arrest and wounding and will appear in the Whangarei District Court later today.
