Paritutu Rock’s summit track is about to get an extreme makeover.

From next Tuesday (9 March) the entire track will be closed to the public for nine weeks while it is upgraded.

On the lower section of track the existing steps will be replaced and new steps installed to make it easier for users to reach an enlarged viewing area about half way up.

On the steeper upper section of the track, the wire handrail will be replaced but the existing stone hand and foot holds will not be changed.

The summit will also have an improved barrier.

“We’re not touching much of the upper track so that those who are adventuresome enough to enjoy a bit of rock climbing can still do so on their way to the summit,” says Manager Parks Mark Bruhn.

“However the extensive work on the lower track will make it easier for people to get from the car park to the half-way lookout.

“The upgrade will also more clearly define the skill level needed on each section of track.”

The improved lower track will include sections of steps to overcome obstacles such as large rocks. The track will be built to the National Walking Standard’s ‘day-tripper standard’ giving reasonable accessibility for an able-bodied person.

“No member of the public will be able to use the track during construction,” says Mr Bruhn.

Paritutu and the Sugar Loaf Islands are the eroded remnants of an ancient volcano, dated to approximately 1.75 million years ago.
