Omanu master surf lifesaving's aged brigade

Sheer weight of numbers helped Omanu to a rampant win in the NZCT Masters Surf Life Saving Championships in Whakatane today.

The precursor to the open nationals was held in stunning Eastern Bay sunshine with a 1m swell cascading into Ohope Beach.

Omanu's dominance throughout the over-30 competition was reflected in their overall tally, accumulating 111.5 points throughout the 142 events on offer and featuring on the podium in nearly half those events.

Their efforts were led by current New Zealand surf lifesaving coach Scott Bartlett, who won the 30-39 run-swim-run and surf race, heading home Westshore's Chris Swain who picked up another masters ironman title as consolation.

Mairangi Bay were a distant second with 61, ahead of three more Bay of Plenty clubs, Papamoa (45), Whakatane (38) and Waihi Beach (29).

Waikanae's Debbie Hutchings and South Brighton's Malcolm McDonald dominated their beach arena, picking up 30-39 titles in both the sprint and flags events.

The open, under-19 and under-16 events start tomorrow with record numbers of 1262 competitors from 44 clubs throughout New Zealand.
