NORTH SHORE CITY

Two men are to appear in the North Shore District Court on a variety of criminal and traffic charges after a series of incidents that involved Police Units from Rodney, North Shore and Auckland as well as the Eagle helicopter and the Police Dog Unit.

Police say that at about Noon on Monday 22 March 2010, an unmarked
Police patrol unit saw a white Honda vehicle acting suspiciously in the suburb of Silverdale.

A Strategic Traffic unit followed the Honda which then proceeded at speed onto the Motorway travelling south. It was established that the vehicle had been stolen from Mount Wellington earlier in the day.

At Grenville Road on the North Shore an attempt to block the Honda was unsuccessful and the speeding vehicle then exited at Constellation Drive where it continued into the Wairau Park area.

The police helicopter Eagle continued surveillance of the speeding Honda.

At Archers Road one of the two male occupants jumped out of the vehicle and was caught by police. The man suffered moderate injuries and required hospital attention.

The stolen car continued on, using the bus lane to cross the Harbour Bridge before exiting the motorway at Gillies Avenue. Eagle then saw the vehicle enter the grounds of Auckland Hospital and a police dog unit was alerted.

The male driver fled into the hospital building where a member of the security staff alerted police and the man was apprehended and arrested.

The driver of the stolen car drove an estimated 27 kilometres in his efforts to elude police. A search of the vehicle located three large televisions, and other property valued at $30,000 stolen from a burglary at Silverdale earlier in day.

Further property was located and police enquiries are continuing.

A 29 year old unemployed male from Kaikohe, and a 22 year old unemployed male from Otahuhu will appear in the North Shore District Court today on eight charges including theft of property, burglary, unlawful taking and entering of a motor vehicle, theft ex car, failing to stop, reckless driving and providing false details.
