NORTHLAND

Chris Scott and Jaron Mumby finished their long IRB career on a high but East End finished on top on the final day of the national championships in Waipu Cove, Northland, today.

After 14 years as one of New Zealand's most successful crews, Fitzroy's Scott and Mumby retired with wins in the premier single rescue, the assemby rescue and the open team's race over the three days of competition.

It was an appropriate finish for the champion duo, who have collected more than 30 national titles in that long tenure and represented New Zealand in 2003.

They didn't have things all their own way, however - fellow Taranaki competitors Andrew Cronin and James Morwood (East End) won the premier mass rescue and opening day tube rescue, helping their club claim overall honours again.

East End finished with 77 points, 14 clear of Fitzroy with Hawke's Bay's Waimarama and Canterbury's Sumner clubs breaking the Taranaki dominance by finishing third equal on 34 points, ahead of New Plymouth Old Boys on 31.

Sumner's Blair Quane and Simon Williams, Muriwai's Ash Matuschka and Andrew Lancaster and Paekakariki's Brent Harvey and Richard Whinham all picked up podium spots, but none could usurp the Taranaki champions.

In the women's competition, Fitzroy's Emma Crofskey and Katie Watts picked up the coveted single rescue title, the assembly rescue and the mass rescue crowns, heading home St Clair sisters Carla and Stephanie Laughton each time.

Waihi, East End and St Kilda each picked up bronze medals for their efforts.
