Fatal crash at SH1 Maheno

At approximately 1.00pm on Monday the 29th of March 2010 there was a crash involving two vehicles on State Highway 1, Reidston, Oamaru.

Early indications are that the driver of a Mazda Familia car has attempted to pull out of an address on State Highway 1 intending to head towards Oamaru. The driver has failed to see a logging truck and trailer unit coming from the opposite direction.

The resulting collision caused the Mazda to spin 360 degrees and it came to rest at the side of the road. The sole occupant of the Mazda, an 87 year old male, was trapped in the vehicle. He was extracted by emergency services and was flown by helicopter to the Dunedin Public Hospital where he died a short time later.

The logging truck was empty at the time of the crash with the empty trailer secured on the back of the truck.

No details of the deceased will be released at this time as some next of kin still have yet to be notified.
