ACC is welcoming the conviction of Helen Elizabeth Spray in the North Shore District Court yesterday.
Ms Spray was convicted on four charges, under the Crimes Act and ACC’s own Act. Ms Spray misrepresented her situation to ACC and received over $8,000 weekly compensation to which she was not entitled.

Ms Spray was sentenced to seven months home detention and has repaid the money.

“ACC manages public money and takes a zero-tolerance approach to fraud. ACC levies are intended to help injured people not fraudsters and we work hard to make sure that happens,” said Denise Cosgrove, ACC’s General Manager of Claims Management.

While fraudulent behaviour does not directly result in people missing out on care, it does have an impact on the amount of money ACC needs to collect.

“I am happy that the money that had been fraudulently claimed can now be used where it’s most needed; supporting and rehabilitating injured New Zealanders,” Denise Cosgrove said.
