Exercising caution and keeping safe are important messages motorists should keep in mind when travelling, but when holiday time rolls around they are sometimes forgotten.

"Last weekend was another of those killer weekends that we do not want repeated. Now as Easter comes around, Police want everyone to be mindful of the risks," says National Manager - Road Policing, Superintendent Paula Rose.

Easter can be a particularly hazardous time on the road but sticking to the speed limit and watching your travelling distance can make a big difference. All motorists are responsible for making our roads safer.

"The holidays are a time to relax and enjoy the company of friends and family but we still need to share the roads with care", said Superintendent Rose.

Police are encouraging road users to take care and not endanger themselves or others by making sensible and careful decisions when driving over this busy time of year. There are a few simple and sensible precautions that can be life savers.

"Holiday driving requires extra care and patience, and most drivers understand this," said Superintendent Rose.

As part of the Police campaign on the roads this Easter, emphasis will be on:

• Smooth traffic flows so driver frustration and delays are kept to a minimum;
• Encouraging slower drivers to pull over safely to enable traffic to pass; and
• Deterring those who put everyone else’s life at risk by driving too fast for the conditions, drinking and driving, and other irresponsible behaviour.

The official Easter holiday period will begin at 0400 hrs on Thursday 1st April 2010 and end at 0600 hrs 06 April 2010.
