PUKEKOHE

World champion Sarah Walker made it two from two when she took out the cruiser class title at the RaboPlus New Zealand Championships near Pukekohe today.

Walker was not quite able to make it a treble, finishing second in the Superclass series after winning the elite national title yesterday. The popular Walker was busy signing autographs for some of the younger BMX competitors and missed her start time for the third of four heats.

That left New Plymouth’s Victoria Hill to take the Superclass title, while Walker was untroubled in winning the Cruiser class, even without registering any points in the final moto after she unsuccessfully tried to jump the elite men’s Supercross jumps.

It proved a double for new national elite men’s champion Kurt Pickard, who followed up his outstanding victory in the elite men’s final yesterday by winning the Superclass after taking full points in all of his three motos.

All the world championship medallists from Adelaide last year were successful back on home soil today. They were led by world champions Rico Bearman (North Harbour) and Tahlia Hansen (Rangiora), who won the seven years and 13 years titles respectively today.

Hansen headed off Emma Gates (Waitakere) and Abagail Fox (Gisborne) for the medals, with the three young kiwis also claiming all the medals at the last world championships.

Silver medallists in the worlds, Jessie Smith (Gisborne), Rebecca Petch (Te Awamutu) and Hannah Sarten (New Plymouth) all triumphed today winning titles in the nine years, 11 years and 13 years age groups respectively.

Also at the top of the podium today was popular Rotorua rider Dave Mohi, the bronze medallist at the world championships, who aged up to win the men’s 40 years plus title today.
