Increasing the lead of two of their riders in the RaboPlus National Point Series is the focus of the Subway – Avanti Pro Cycling team in this Saturday’s 160 kilometre Kaimai Cycles 1000 road race in the Waikato region.

New Zealand’s only UCI Continental team has entered five riders in the event which is round four of the National Points Series.

Subway – Avanti’s Mathew Gorter leads the series with 115 points, with team mate Gordon McCauley second on 110 points. Christchurch teenager Josh Aktins with 100 points is tied for third with Patrick Bevan.

“We will be focused on working to increase Mathew and Gordy’s lead in the series,” Subway – Avanti Pro Cycling team Manager Greg Hume said.

“We are very keen to deliver our key riders to the finish in good shape to get a result.”

Gorter started the series strongly winning the opening round in the Yarrows Taranaki event and backed that result up with a seventh in the Perry Foundation The Rev in late February before crashing in the lead bunch with the finish line in sight in round three at the Forrest Graperide late last month.

Five times National Champion and current National Time Trial Champion McCauley collected his points with a second place in the Perry Foundation The Rev and was third in the Forrest Graperide.

The next best placed Subway – Avanti rider in the series is Sam Horgan who has 44 points and lies seventh. He is currently overseas racing.

The Subway – Avanti line up for this Saturday is McCauley, Gorter, Nick Lovegrove, Joe Cooper and Eric Drower.

The series moves to the South Island West Coast on Saturday 17 April with the Around Brunner event.
