MORRINSVILLE

The Subway – Avanti Pro Cycling Team filled the top three spots as it dominated Saturday’s 160 kilometre Kaimai Cycles 1000 road race in the Waikato region.

Team leader and National time trial champion Gordon McCauley crossed ahead of his Subway - Avanti teammate Eric Drower to win the men's title and take the lead in the RaboPlus National Point Series lead from another Subway Avanti rider, Matt Gorter.

Gorter won the chasing bunch sprint to take third, eight minutes behind the leading pair for what was a successful day for Subway – Avanti.

Increasing the lead of McCauley and Gorter in the National Point Series was the focus of the team and Team Manager Greg Hume said it was a job well done on Saturday.

“We entered five riders and had a very clear focus to deliver our key riders to the finish in good shape to get a result. The boys fronted and delivered; we’re very happy and will now turn our attention to Round Five of the National Points Series, Around Brunner, this Saturday.”

McCauley said the team had a point to prove after not quite getting the results it wanted in previous weeks.

“We went early and rode away from the field. It was like a 70 kilometre two man team time trial, that’s how we rode it. I couldn’t have done it without Eric and I was probably a bit stronger towards the end as I’m more experienced riding in long breakaways.”

Subway – Avanti’s McCauley now leads the National series with 210 points, with team mate Gorter second on 155 points.

The series and the Subway – Avanti Pro Cycling Team moves to the South Island West Coast this Saturday for the Around Brunner event.
