Development in investigation into assault on Ngaruawahia Police officer

Western Waikato detectives are currently interviewing a man in relation to the overnight attack on a Policeman that saw the officer lying in the street unconscious.

Huntly Sub-Area Manager, Senior Sergeant Pete Simpson said the latest development came as a result of sound investigative work following up on good information received from the public.

"The man was located at a Ngaruawahia address a short distance from where the attack took place and he is currently being interviewed by detectives."

As the injured officer's supervisor Mr Simpson said he felt for the officer who had done everything correctly but still suffered injuries after going to the aid of a woman being assaulted.

"The officer was one of three Huntly Sub-Area staff on however his two immediate colleagues were attending a domestic incident in Te Kauwhata. Assistance was on its way from the Hamilton based dog section and a Raglan patrol when the attack happened."

Mr Simpson said before those staff arrived a member of the public approached the officer imploring him to intervene, which he did, and as a result suffered his injuries.

"Fortunately a bystander who is yet to be identified raised the alarm using a Police radio and back up staff arrived within minutes, we're very grateful for that person's actions."

Mr Simpson said on speaking to the officer today it was apparent no additional weapon or device, such as a taser would have prevented his injuries.

"Use of a taser is governed by strict rules of engagement and the officer said in the situation he found himself in last night it would have made no difference to the outcome had a taser been available."
