RNZAF Iroquois incident - Media Release 1

A Royal New Zealand Air Force Iroquois helicopter has crashed enroute from Ohakea to Anzac Day commemorations in Wellington.

The incident occurred near Pukerua Bay, just north of Wellington and emergency services are at the scene.

In consideration for the families of those on board the helicopter, the nature of the injuries sustained by the crew is not being made public. However, there will be updates throughout the day.

It is with deep regret that acting Chief of Defence Force, Vice Chief of Defence Force, Rear Admiral Jack Steer, can confirm that three members of the New Zealand Defence Force have died as a result of injuries sustained following the crash of a Royal New Zealand Air Force Iroquois helicopter.

A fourth NZDF person has sustained serious injuries and we are currently in the process of establishing their status.

The helicopter from No. 3 SQN based at Ohakea Air Force Base was en route to Anzac commemorations in Wellington.

Next of kin have been informed or are in the process of being informed of the tragic deaths of these young people in the service of the Defence Force.

There will be a press conference later in the day giving more information on this incident and a statement on this will follow.

The New Zealand Defence Force can confirm that the fourth person injured in this morning’s crash of a Royal New Zealand Air Force Iroquois helicopter is being treated at Wellington Hospital.

There will be a media conference at Ohakea Air Force Base where the Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Graham Lintott, will provide further comment.
