The BikeNZ BMX team are safely on their way to Europe after an enforced stopover in California for the past week.

The squad, including double world champion Sarah Walker, were to fly to Europe last week to take part in a special training camp with the Dutch national squad as part of their build-up for the upcoming World Cup in Denmark.

The squad made it as far as Los Angeles because of the Icelandic volcanic ash issue but were able to train at the US BMX Supercross training venue at Chula Vista near San Diego.

They flew out to Europe yesterday to compete in the European Championship round in Italy at the weekend which is a shakedown for the UCI Supercross World Cup in Copenhagen on 7-8 May.

They were able to train alongside many of North American’s leading riders who are also preparing to compete in Denmark.

“There were six of the world’s top 20 ranked men training at the same time as us so it has worked out to be an unexpected benefit for the squad,” coach Ken Cools said.

“Judging by their training we are feeling quite confident about the upcoming European rounds.”
