A list of potential sites and assessment criteria for Nelson’s Performing Arts and Conference Centre will be finalised at next Thursday’s Council meeting.

Mayor Kerry Marshall says “Our commitment to this project has never waned. The challenge as always is to find the location that offers the best value for money while still meeting the needs of residents and our vision for the Performing Arts and Conference Centre. I am excited about the number of possibilities that have been identified. This short-listing and assessment process is another major milestone for us to achieve and I look forward to hearing what residents think of the suggestions in due course.”

Following the Council decision last year to look at ways of progressing the project, staff compiled a long list of potential sites. At a Council workshop and after Councillor feedback this was whittled down to a short list. This short-list will formally be presented to the Nelson City Council meeting on Thursday 6 May.

The potential sites are on both Council owned land and privately owned land. Because of commercial sensitivity, discussions around the privately owned sites will be confidential at this stage.

The recommended Council-owned sites include:

  • Millers Acre
  • Elma Turner Library
  • Halifax Street Croquet Green
  • Rutherford Park
  • Trafalgar Park Number 2

Discussions will take place with the owners of potential sites on private land with the aim of releasing a full list of possible sites for public consultation in June/July this year.
