Police are reminding drivers that they will continue to strictly enforce the law prohibiting driving while talking on a cellphone or texting.

Legislation prohibiting the use of hand held cell phones when driving has now been in force for six months. Results for the first five months show there has been a slight rise in the numbers of offences detected.

"Using a hand held cell phone when driving presents risks for the driver and other road users" said Superintendent Paula Rose, National Manager - Road Policing.

"Road safety is everyone's responsibility and together we must work towards making driving safer for us all."

Initially Police adopted a discretionary approach to enforcing the legislation using the first months to ensure that drivers understood the new law and how it applied to them.

Through enforcement we are now keeping the pressure on drivers to comply with this law which is intended to protect all road users."
