Part of Windy Point (Maungaroa) in Blagdon might be put up for sale, following a recommendation from NPDC’s Monitoring Committee tonight (Tuesday).

The recommendation, which will be considered by the full Council at its meeting on 1 June, is to sell the land subject to further discussions with interested parties, and another report on the method of sale and ways to protect the site’s waahi tapu.

“The summit of Windy Point as been identified as protected under the Historic Places Act as it is an archaeological site and waahi tapu, and this will need to be taken into account in any application to develop the property,” says Manager Property Assets Peter Handcock.

“Some land would also be sold or leased to the New Zealand Police for telecommunications purposes, and a right of way easement would need to be negotiated with Telecom New Zealand.

“So even if the Council does give the go-ahead for the sale, there is still some work to be done before anything reaches the market.”

Neither Ngati te Whiti Ahi Kaa or Ngati te Whiti Hapu Society have any concerns about the sale of the land. However two other parties claim whakapapa to the land, with one objecting to the sale and the other interested in purchasing it.

The Windy Point land has been considered surplus by the Council for a number of years.
