Fatal motor crash North of Oamaru

Just before 0300 this morning Thursday May 13, 2010, a fatal motor crash has occurred on SH 1, at Richmond, north of Oamaru.

The crash involved a motorcycle with single rider and Police are still trying to establish what has actually occurred.

Police were not notified of the crash for about 30 minutes, and in that time a number of vehicles have driven past the crashed motorcycle.

Driving conditions at the time were extremely poor with mist and darkness.

Police would like to speak to anyone who was travelling on State Highway 1, in the Richmond/Papakaio (Oamaru) area between 0330 and 0430 this morning.

Irrespective of whether people travelling in this area believe they saw anything or not, it is important that they contact Police and they are asked to do so.

The rider is believed to be an 18 year old South Canterbury man, and enquiries are continuing to notify the next of kin.

A number of staff from the Southern region are working on this investigation at the present time.
