Organisers of the annual Kapiti Horowhenua Electra Business Awards continue to innovate with the first publication of a case study focussed on the winner of the Business of the Year award last year, Turk’s Poultry Farm Ltd of Foxton.

The case study highlights the changes in the firm that led it from a category award win in 2006 to the supreme accolade in 2009.

The nine page report was independently compiled and written by Chris Inneson of Driving Forces, an Olympian and business specialist, in cooperation with Turks Poultry.

He says Turks applied a holistic and strategic approach based on sound business practices and continuous quality improvement that encompasses every aspect of its operations. According to Mr Inneson the company’s strategy demonstrates how to use awards for benefit – first have an attitude to learn from the awards involvement, then to go for a category before seeking the ultimate accolade – the Business of the Year Award.

The case study tells of a typical New Zealand family based business problem of handover from father to son, the need for strong governance, implementation of process improvement and development of a growth strategy.

The case study can be read in full at www.electra.co.nz/businessawards/business_of_the_year_case_study

Turk's Poultry Farm Ltd is a family owned and operated poultry producer and processing unit. It has been operating in the Kapiti-Horowhenua district since 1966 as an egg producer and since 1996 as a broiler chicken production unit. The business currently employs one hundred and forty-five staff at five locations from Auckland to Foxton and is vertically integrated from rearing to sales and dispatch of poultry products.

Turks Poultry was founded by Mr John Turk (snr). With the support of his wife, family and dedicated staff and their hard work and commitment to the ideals of his original business plan the company has grown into the business and staff structure that it has today.

Turks Poultry Farm Ltd now deals in products and services that include eggs, poultry products, small goods, and an engineering firm. This diverse and challenging range of products and services is watched over and guided by the Company Manager, Ron Turk, and a five person Management Team

Turk's market is predominately in the lower North Island with a satellite depot in Auckland which looks after some major clients. Turks main competitors are New Zealand's two biggest chicken suppliers; Tegal and Ingham's for chicken products and Mainland Eggs for egg products.
