Fatal crash - SH29, Karapiro

Police have closed a section of SH29 between the eastern end of Lake Karapiro and Hinuera as they deal with a fatal crash.

The crash was reported at 10.36pm and early indications are that a single car struck a cow which was on the highway. The scene is 300m north of the intersection with Totman and Taotaoroa Roads.

One man died at the scene and the other male occupant of the car has been taken to Waikato hospital in a serious condition.

It is not known how the animal, which was killed in the collision, came to be on the road.

Serious crash investigators are at the scene and a further release will be made in due course.
