WELLINGTON CITY

The Indoor Community Sports Centre (ICSC) is shooting skywards with the installation of the first five giant precast concrete panels now visible to passersby.

There will eventually be 133 of these 10-metre panels forming part of the building's wall system. The heaviest panel weighs in at around 18 tonnes.

In the next three months contractor Mainzeal will focus on completing the underground car park for 140 cars and progressing the structural steel frames and pre-cast concrete panels towards the Kemp Street boundary.

The Council's Project Manager in charge of construction, Jim Coard, says it is exciting to see the building start to take shape.

"Mainzeal has been on site since January this year and building progress has been steady with full excavation of the car park completed and the installation of new sewer and water mains."

The ICSC, with its 12 courts, will be able to host local, regional, national and potentially international sports tournaments and is expected to be completed around August 2011.
