LEVIN

As a last resort Police trying to identify a man struck by a train in Levin are issuing photos of him taken in the hospital.

"We've held off issuing photos as long as possible," said Detective Brenda Kelly. "If there are family out there we appreciate it could be upsetting to see a loved one pictured in these circumstances, but it has been five days now since he was injured and it is so important that we find out who he is."

Detective Kelly is keen to stress that people need to look beyond the photos. Because of the trauma the man has suffered and the medication he is now on his face changes daily.

"Please take into consideration the swelling, look deeply at the photo and also look at the identikit which is sculptured from facial bone structure."

Detective Kelly visited the man again this morning. He is in a serious but stable condition on life-support and remains unresponsive. He has opened his eyes briefly, and this is happening more frequently as the days go on. He is scheduled for more surgery tomorrow.

"I'm sure there are friends and family out there who he would rather have sitting talking to him than me," said Detective Kelly. "Please if you have any idea who this man is call us. If you were on the train and you saw this man, call us. Keep an open mind as to where he is from as he could be from anywhere, and his name is not necessarily Alan; it is simply a name he said in the ambulance."

Police also want to hear about any wallets or unattended baggage that have been found that might be relevant.

"We have had a fantastic public response but we still need more," said Detective Kelly. "I urge you again to check on your loved ones; ring your dad, ring your brother. If you think this might be a relative try to contact them and if you can't locate them or have concerns, then call us."

Anyone with information relevant to this investigation is asked to contact Levin Police Station on 06 366 0500.
