At 11.14am this morning Nelson Airport Security Staff reported to Police that they had located suspicious baggage which had been left unattended inside the main terminal building with ticking sounds coming from inside the baggage.

Senior Sergeant Stu Koefoed of Nelson Police stated that. "Nelson Airport Staff evacuated the terminal building and closed down the airport for a short period of time. Police enquiries identified the elderly person who had inadvertently left the baggage. Examination of the baggage revealed an older style analogue alarm clock which was the source of the tricking sound with no other items of interest being evident. This is another example of people not taking proper care of their baggage inside public buildings which has resulted in unnecessary disruption to Nelson Airport and passengers using this facility. The elderly man is being spoken to by local police about the incident."

Senior Sergeant Koefoed praised Nelson Airport Staff for the way that they dealt with the suspicious baggage and stated that their actions were in accordance with established emergency procedures in cases such as these.
