An armed robber got more than he bargained for when he attempted to rob a dairy in Orewa last night.

Police say that about 5.50pm Wednesday 9 June 2010, the offender entered a dairy situated at the north end of the Hibiscus Coast Highway.

The offender presented a large kitchen knife at the two shop operators and demanded they get down on the floor.

The offender was surprised and shocked when suddenly one of the shop retailers presented a much larger weapon and chased the offender down Hibiscus Coast Highway in a southerly direction.

The male offender is then believed to have run down an alleyway to Elizabeth Street where it’s believed he has then been picked up by a waiting vehicle.

Police have issued a description of the male offender. He is male Caucasian, aged 15-20 years, wearing a distinctive grey and black chequered hooded top. His lower face is covered by a scarf, bandana or similar item of clothing.

Police are appealing to the public for any information that will identify the offender whose image has been captured on the dairy’s security surveillance footage.

Police do not encourage shop retailers to take similar action of this kind as there is real prospect of someone being seriously injured in such circumstances.

Anyone with information that will assist this police investigation is urged to contact Orewa Police on 09 427 6381 or alternatively Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
