Congratulations are in order for Stratford’s Transfer Station and site manager Collette Holgate for winning a Taranaki Regional Council Environmental award this year.

The award was presented for the commitment to effective reuse and recycling of resources.

Collette is employed by Waste Management - a Division of Transpacific Industries Group (NZ) Limited, and Stratford District Council wish to thank both Waste Management and their employee for their excellent services.

Their commitment to the station has recognised it as a model ‘resource recovery centre’ and demonstrates what can be achieved by people who go that extra mile.

Visitors to the Stratford Transfer Station appreciate the clean and tidy environment that Collette has created.

Collette’s passion for her work and the wider environmental issues involved is obvious. She estimates that each week she diverts from the waste stream, about one third or 100 cubic metres of the material brought in.

Collette makes a huge effort to redirect items such as furniture, kitchen items and timber to those who can make good use of them. Other material like old whiteware and metal is recycled.

The awards recognise Taranaki projects and activities that contribute to or promote community awareness of sustainable management, are economically viable, and that are current, ongoing or nearing completion.

“The awards are an opportunity to recognize some of these efforts and hold them up as an example and an inspiration” says Taranaki Regional Council Chairmen, David MacLeod.
