Tauranga Police are now able to formally name the elderly man who died from an assault in his home as 76 year old David Tait, from The Avenues suburb in Tauranga.

Mr Tait was discovered in his home yesterday with serious head injuries. He died in hospital around midday today.

A 45 year old Tauranga man, Murray Tait, appeared in the Tauranga District Court late this morning charged with assault. He has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on June 30, when further charges may be laid.

Tauranga Police have confirmed that the accused is the victim's son.

The officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Lindsay Pilbrow, says Police believe the assault was a domestic-related incident.

There will be no further update from Police today.
