MAPUA

At 1am this morning a vehicle carrying four young males, travelling towards Mapua on the Coastal Highway has lost control, crossed onto the other side of the road and collided with several large trees.

A 20 year old rear passenger was removed from the vehicle by the Mapua Volunteer Fire Brigade and taken to Nelson Hospital. He is expected to be transferred to Wellington Hospital today due to the serious head and chest injuries he suffered.

The Toyota Altezza was extensively damaged and the other three occupants were all extremely lucky to escape with only minor injuries.

Inquires to date indicate the driver had not been drinking; there were no other vehicles involved and the Police Serious Crash will be investigating.

The Highway was closed for approximately 3 hours but motorists avoided any delays by travelling through the Mapua town ship.
