Tauranga South Police have apprehended a group of offenders who have admitted to breaking into more than 40 motor vehicles in the Welcome Bay and Maungatapu areas.

The Officer in Charge of Greerton South Police Station, Detective Sergeant Lewis Warner, says Police have had a strong focus on thefts from cars after a number of incidents in the area.

"As a result, we have apprehended a number of offenders over the past month, including some under the age of 17.

"When members of the group were spoken to by Police in relation to this offending, they indicated they were specifically targeting vehicles that were unlocked – even if they were inside properties. If the cars were locked, they simply moved on.

"This is a timely reminder that all people in the Western Bay should ensure their vehicles are locked, even when parked in driveways. We also ask people to make sure they remove all valuables or keep them well out of sight.

"Just as people should keep their front door locked if they are gardening at the back of their property, for example, they should make sure all their other belongings are secure as well, including cars and bikes.

"This is also an important reminder that if people see any suspicious behaviour they should report it to the Police. See something, say something and don't hesitate to call 111 – we have a much better chance of catching offenders if we know about it quickly."
