Wellington Police are investigating the aggravated robbery of the BP service station in Newlands last night.

Detective Sergeant Jason Perry says at about 7-15pm last night, a man entered the BP armed with a knife and demanded cash and cigarettes from the male staff member.

"The offender has made off with a sum of money and cigarettes and has fled the scene on foot."

He's described as a male, about 5 foot 10, of average build. He was wearing a motorcycle helmet and a plain black hooded sweatshirt.

Detective Sergeant Perry is urging anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in Newlands about this time last night to phone either the Wellington Police or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
