High-profile Brooklands Zoo resident Mungo the red panda has passed away.

Mungo was 11 years old.

Technical Officer Zoo Eve Cozzi says Mungo had been slowing down for several months, but more than a week ago he took a bad turn.

“He has a history of illness but a week and a half ago he got worse,” she says.

“We were treating him with the guidance of a vet but he didn’t respond, and this morning the decision was made to put him down.

“He’s going to be so missed by the zoo staff and visitors. He was a real character – he didn’t like other red pandas but he trusted the zoo keepers he knew, and he seemed really happy and content at Brooklands.”

Mungo was transferred to Brooklands Zoo from Hamilton Zoo nearly four years ago, on 28 July 2006.
