Porirua Police are urging small businesses in the Elsdon and Kenepuru commercial areas to beware, following a recent spate of burglaries.

Constable Damian Parker of the Porirua Police Burglary Squad says there has been close to 20 reported burglaries in these commercial areas over the past five months, where cash boxes have been stolen.

"We're continuing to investigate this spate of burglaries, which is unusual for Porirua. We're also actively policing commercial areas in and around Elsdon and Kenepuru but we need small business owners to remain vigilant."

Constable Parker urges businesses to remove their cash boxes or cash registers at the end of each day and at weekends and make sure their premises are secured, checking all windows and doors and ensuring alarms are activated.

"The community is our eyes and ears and if anyone has any information about this, they can call me at the Porirua Police (04) 238 1400 and their information will be treated confidentially."
