GISBORNE

The search for missing four-year-old Lucas Ward continues in Gisborne today, with the police dive squad again searching the Waimata River.

Searching continued until early evening yesterday, with dozens of police, search and rescue and community volunteers scouring the Graham Rd area of Inner Kaiti. The police dive squad also spent yesterday afternoon searching the Waimata River, that runs parallel behind properties on Graham Rd.

Gisborne Area Commander Inspector Sam Aberahama said searchers would continue today looking along the riverbank near Lucas’ house and surrounding streets.

Police were also following up on information about five reported sightings of Lucas in the area on Tuesday afternoon when he went missing.

Mr Aberahama said the response from the public had been great and people were coming forward with information about possible sightings of the boy. There had also been a fantastic response to calls for help to search for the boy.

“The disappearance of Lucas has affected this community greatly and there is a huge swell of concern and support for the family. We have been inundated with offers of help and we are extremely grateful for that level of support,” Mr Aberahama said.

Police would again be out on the street today speaking to local residents of Inner Kaiti.
