Far North Police are today appealing for the public's help in tracking down a vehicle that has left the scene of a fatal accident on State Highway 12 last night. The incident occurred near the rural settlement of Whirinaki.

A 45 year old man was discovered lying beside the State Highway at about 8.45 PM last night (07/09/2010). He had suffered significant head trauma and died a short time later despite the efforts of members of the public and paramedics.

Whilst no vehicle was seen, police believe the injuries and scene are consistent with the deceased having been struck by a motorist travelling towards Opononi. A post mortem examination has been scheduled for Thursday morning. The deceased's name has not been released yet as Police are still contacting some members of his family.

Police are hoping that the public may be able to assist, reporting any suspicious behaviour regarding recently damaged vehicles.

Anybody that was travelling in the area on Tuesday night is also asked to contact Kaikohe Police on 09 4052960.
